Mental arithmetic is not a replacement for the abacus — it is what comes after it. The shapes your hands learn become the beads you see in your head. This transition, which normally only a teacher can check, is handled here in five stages.
It does not wait for a whole family of facts to settle. Each fact crosses over as soon as it is learned on the beads.
A real abacus does not know how you flicked it. A screen sees the order. When a child tries to add 8 straight onto a 7 in the ones column, it can say what is missing and show the correct movement right there.
If the answer is right but the movement differs, it shows the standard movement. It is not marked wrong.
Instead of “820 points this week”, it says “6+8 (the combined five-and-ten split) averages 2.4 seconds”. That is the same language a soroban teacher uses, so you can tell what you are looking at. The week's record can be exported to take to class.
